Experimental methods used in the study of solid matter at high pressures are described and a systematic analysis pressure is performed. The materials are investigated at room temperature using a diamond anvil cell by means of x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption, Raman scattering, and optical absorption measurements. The experimental results are compared to available data of theoretical calculations. The pressure dependence of the band grap, lattice parameters, ibnteratomic distances, vibrational modes, and pressure- induced phase transitions in these compounds are discussed.
